There are 2 major type of 4WS system, passive and active. On passive systems, it can be found on cars like the Porsche 928 in 1977. The goal of this system is to prevent understeer when turning by  intentionally making the rear wheel to toe in when braking.

Later, Nissan came up with an active 4WS system called High Capacity Actively Controlled Steering aka HICAS on the R31 Nissan Skyline. This system itself developed into the Super HICAS system used in newer models, especially the Nissan Skyline GTR R34.

For more mass produced cars, it can be found on the Honda Accord and Prelude that uses an active 4WS system.

This active system is very smart. At high speeds, the rear wheels will turn parallel with the front wheels, making lane change more agile, like crab walking.

Then at low speeds, usually the rear wheels will turn the opposite direction, helping to reduce the turning radius and make the car more agile in urban areas.

Sistem aktif ini sangatlah pintar. Pada kecepatan tinggi, maka roda belakang akan berbelok paralel dengan roda depan, membuat perpindahan jalur lebih lincah, seperti berjalan kepiting.

Kemudian pada kecepatan rendah, biasanya roda belakang akan berbelok berlawanan, membantu mengurangi radius putar dan membuat mobil menjadi lebih lincah di perkotaan.
