Understeer and oversteer are terms in vehicle dynamics that describe the response of the steering wheel when driven. Both of these conditions arise when the car is not in its ideal state, making them both potentially dangerous for the driver and passengers.

What is Understeer?

Understeer occurs when a car has less steering performance than the driver has instructed, so it can't complete what it's been instructed to do. For example, the driver wants to turn left and has moved the steering wheel to the left as it should be. But the car cannot turn the wheels and move the car as instructed.

If the steering wheel has been turned sharply to the left, but only moves to the left slightly, this is also included in the understeer condition. Usually, understeer is followed by the sound of squealing tires as the wheels lose their pressure, especially when driving fast.

What is Oversteer?

Oversteer is a problem often encountered in cars with rear wheel drive (RWD). The rear wheels should only be in charge of sending power from the engine to the road and for braking. So if the rear wheels have to cope with excessive pressure on the steering wheel as well, the wheels will lose traction and oversteer will occur.

What happens when a car is in a state of oversteer? In extreme cases, oversteer can cause the car to spin out of control. Oversteer can also be controlled, but usually only by a skilled driver. In movies like Fast and Furious, we know the terms drifting or power sliding. But under normal conditions, oversteer is definitely not a desirable thing.

Apa Itu Oversteer?

Pengertian oversteer adalah masalah yang sering dihadapi pada mobil dengan penggerak roda belakang (Rear Wheel Drive/RWD). Roda belakang seharusnya hanya bertugas mengirim tenaga dari mesin ke jalan dan untuk mengerem saja. Jadi kalau roda belakang harus mengatasi tekanan berlebihan pada setir juga, maka roda akan kehilangan traksi dan terjadi oversteer.

Apa yang terjadi kalau mobil dalam keadaan oversteer? Pada kasus yang ekstrem, oversteer dapat menyebabkan mobil berputar-putar tanpa kendali. Oversteer juga bisa dikontrol, tapi biasanya hanya oleh pengemudi andal. Kalau dalam film-film seperti Fast and Furious, kita mengenal istilah drifting atau power sliding.
