Get to Know the Components of a Car Steering Wheel

For some people, a car steering wheel is just a circle that can be turned to the right and left. However, behind its simple shape, the steering wheel plays a major role in determining the direction, stability, and safety of a car on the road. This component is the driver's "right hand" for controlling the vehicle with precision.

To better understand the steering system, it's a good idea to know the important parts behind the steering wheel you hold every day. Because behind the smooth movement of turning the steering wheel, there are a number of components that work hard to maintain driving comfort and safety.

1. Ball Joint

This part is shaped like a small ball that connects steering components. Its function is very important, to change the direction of the wheels flexibly. But if you often drive on rough or extreme roads, the ball joint can wear out quickly.

What are the signs? When the wheels are shaken vertically after being jacked up, you can feel a gap. This means that the ball joint needs to be checked or replaced. Don't underestimate this component, as it is vital for maintaining wheel stability and vehicle direction.

2. Tie-Rod End

The tie-rod end transmits commands from the steering wheel to the wheels. If this part starts to wear out, the wheels can become "loose" and the steering can feel loose.

You can test it yourself by jacking up the wheel and shaking it horizontally. If it feels loose, the tie-rod end may need to be replaced. If left unchecked, the steering wheel could lose complete control—which is extremely dangerous on the road.

3. Steering House

The steering house converts the steering wheel's rotation into vertical movement. This system allows the car to turn with precision.

If you feel that the steering wheel is getting heavier or too loose, there may be a problem with the steering house settings. Worn axles can also add "play" to the steering, which, if left unchecked, can make the car difficult to control.

4. Steering Column

The steering column is attached directly to the car body via a special bracket. Its function is not only to transmit power from the steering wheel to the steering system, but also to absorb the energy of impact during a collision. So, in the event of a collision, this part helps reduce the impact on the driver.

Its flexible design allows the steering column to move up and down to adjust to the driver's position.

5. Steering Wheel

This is the most familiar part: the steering wheel. This is where all commands begin.

The design can vary depending on the car, with some being large, small, or even elliptical. But the function remains the same: to control the direction and response of the car. The choice of steering wheel shape can also affect your comfort and driving style.

6. Steering Gear Box

This component directs the front wheels and acts as a reduction gear to make the steering feel lighter. The reduction ratio is usually around 18–20:1. If this system malfunctions, the steering wheel may feel heavy or unresponsive. Regular checks are essential to maintain optimal performance.

7. Steering Linkage

The steering linkage consists of rods and arms that transmit motion from the steering gear to the front wheels. It can be said that this is the main connector that ensures commands from the steering wheel are translated into wheel movement. Without this component, the car cannot be controlled properly.

8. Dust Boot

Finally, there is the dust boot. Although small in size, it plays a big role: protecting the rack from dust and dirt.

Made of flexible rubber, the dust boot follows the movement of the rack shaft to keep it clean and durable. If this part is torn or ripped, dust can get in and cause the steering system to break down quickly.

Conclusion

Each component in the steering system has its own function, but they all share the same goal: to keep the steering wheel responsive and the car controllable and safe. So, don't just focus on the exterior appearance, but also maintain the steering components regularly. A little time spent on checking can prevent major problems on the road.
