While driving on a dark road, have you ever experienced a situation where your car's high beams are actually distracting other drivers?

Typically, the use of high beams can be distracting to other drivers due to the blinding light, especially for vehicles coming from the opposite direction. 

Therefore, drivers are advised to turn off the high beams when the road is crowded or when there are other vehicles nearby.

However, it is not uncommon for drivers to forget or turn off the far light too late, which can cause other drivers to be distracted. To address this, some of today's latest cars are equipped with the High Beam Assist (HBA) feature, which is designed to help drivers in total darkness.

One of the cars that adopts this feature is the Hyundai SANTA FE. Using advanced sensors, High Beam Assist will work automatically to adjust the range of headlamp coverage (switching between far light and near light) depending on the brightness of the detected vehicle and specific road conditions. This feature relies on the front camera used as a detection sensor to detect the light and brightness around the vehicle while driving.

Here are the steps to activate the High Beam Assist feature in Hyundai SANTA FE:

1. Activate from the Infotainment System: After starting the engine, select “Settings” then select “high beam assist” (HBA). This is the first step to using this advanced feature.

2. Position the Light Switch in AUTO Mode: Once HBA is selected, place the headlight switch in the “AUTO” position. This ensures that the system can work automatically according to road conditions.

3. Push the Headlamp Lever Away: If the headlamp lever is pulled towards the driver when the far light is off, the far light will turn on without deactivating the High Beam Assist. When the driver releases the headlamp lever, the lever will move to the center and the far light will turn off.

The far light will automatically dim or switch to low beam when a vehicle from the opposite direction or the taillights of the vehicle ahead are detected. That way, the driver can still see the road clearly during quiet conditions, without worrying about disturbing other motorists when other vehicles pass by.

When the High Beam Assist feature is active, the distant lights will only turn on if the vehicle speed is above 40 km/h (25 mph). At vehicle speeds below 25 km/h (15 mph), the distant lamp will not turn on. Under certain circumstances, the far light will switch to the near light if one of the following conditions occurs: when the headlamp of an oncoming vehicle or the taillight of the vehicle in front is detected, when the headlamp or taillight of a motorcycle or bicycle is detected, and when the light around the vehicle is bright enough or there are street lights so that the far light is not needed.

When the High Beam Assist is not functioning properly, the warning message “Check High Beam Assist (HBA)” or “Check HBA system” will be displayed and the warning light will illuminate on the cluster. If the warning light is on, it is recommended that the system be checked by the nearest authorized repair shop.

Berikut langkah-langkah mengaktifkan fitur High Beam Assist di Hyundai SANTA FE:

1. Mengaktifkan dari Sistem Infotainment: Setelah menyalakan mesin, pilih “Settings” kemudian pilih “high beam assist” (HBA). Ini adalah langkah awal untuk menggunakan fitur canggih ini.

Lampu jauh akan secara otomatis meredup atau berganti ke lampu rendah (low beam) saat terdeteksi ada kendaraan dari arah berlawanan atau lampu belakang kendaraan di depan. Dengan begitu, pengemudi tetap dapat melihat jalan dengan jelas saat kondisi sepi, tanpa khawatir mengganggu pengendara lain saat ada kendaraan lain melintas.

Saat fitur High Beam Assist aktif, lampu jauh hanya akan menyala jika kecepatan kendaraan di atas 40 km/jam (25 mph). Pada kecepatan kendaraan di bawah 25 km/jam (15 mph), lampu jauh tidak akan menyala. Di keadaan tertentu, lampu jauh akan beralih ke lampu dekat jika salah satu kondisi berikut terjadi, yaitu ketika terdeteksi headlamp kendaraan yang melaju atau lampu belakang kendaraan di depan, ketika terdeteksi headlamp atau lampu belakang sepeda motor atau sepeda, serta ketika cahaya di sekitar kendaraan cukup terang atau terdapat lampu jalan sehingga tidak diperlukan lampu jauh.

Ketika High Beam Assist tidak berfungsi dengan benar, pesan peringatan “Check High Beam Assist (HBA)” atau “Check HBA system” akan ditampilkan dan lampu peringatan akan menyala pada cluster. Jika lampu peringatan menyala, maka direkomendasikan agar sistem diperiksa oleh bengkel resmi terdekat.
