The Safe and Proper Way to Open Your Car's Hood

For car owners, the hood is the "main door" to the vehicle's engine. This component is often opened when checking the oil, radiator water, or simply to ensure that the engine is in prime condition. Unfortunately, many drivers still make mistakes when opening the hood. As a result, it's not only troublesome, but it can also damage the locking mechanism.

So, to avoid making mistakes, here are some safe steps for opening your car's hood that you can follow.

1. Make Sure the Car is Turned Off and Parked Safely

Before you start, turn off the engine and make sure the car is parked in a safe and flat place. This is not only for convenience, but also for safety. You don't want the car to move while you're opening the hood.

2. Find the Release Lever Inside the Cabin

Every car usually has a hood release lever, typically located under the dashboard on the driver's side. Pull this lever until you hear a click from the front of the car, indicating that the hood latch has partially opened.

3. Wait for the Engine to Cool Down

Be patient. Make sure the engine has cooled down before opening the hood. If it is still hot, there is a high risk of burning your hands. If it is an emergency, use a thick cloth or protective gloves.

4. Use a Hood Prop (or Let the Suspension Do Its Job)

Once the hood is up, place the prop in its place. However, in some modern cars, you may not need this anymore, as the hydraulic system or suspension automatically holds the hood open.

5. Close the Hood Properly

Finished checking? Don't just close it. Return the prop to its position, then lower the hood and push it slowly until you hear it lock into place. Make sure it is completely closed, because an unlocked hood can open by itself while the car is moving.

6. Perform Routine Checks

Like other components, the hood also needs to be checked periodically. Make sure the hinges and latches are working normally and there is no rust that could cause them to jam.

If the Hood is Jammed, Don't Panic

A classic problem that often causes frustration is a hood that is difficult to open. The causes can vary, from dirt, rust on the hinges, to loose pull cables.

The solution? Clean the area around the hinges and latches with a soft brush, add a little lubricant, and move it slowly. But never force the hood open with excessive force, as this can break the latches. If the problem is severe, it is safer to take it to a repair shop and have a technician handle it.

Why is the hood important?

The hood is not just a cover for the front of the car. This component is also the main access point to various vital parts such as the engine, battery, and cooling system. If the hood is stuck or damaged, routine maintenance becomes difficult.

Keeping the hood in good condition so that it opens and closes easily is not just a matter of convenience, but also a matter of safety and the longevity of your car.

3. Tunggu Mesin Dingin

Sabar sedikit. Pastikan suhu mesin sudah turun sebelum kamu buka kap. Kalau masih panas, risiko tangan terbakar cukup besar. Kalau memang darurat, gunakan kain tebal atau sarung tangan pelindung.

Kalau Kap Mesin Macet, Jangan Panik

Kenapa Kap Mesin Penting?

Kap mesin bukan cuma pelindung bagian depan mobil.
