Understanding Water Hammer

We often hear the term water hammer. This term is also very terrible for engines because if it has been diagnosed with this problem, then the engine will certainly not survive.

What is a water hammer and its cause? Let's talk about it.

First of all, water hammers occur because there is a large amount of water that enters the combustion chamber. Water hammers often occur because the cars are used to drive through deep floods or the cars started after being flooded.

In this case, the water will enter the combustion chamber through the engine intakes. So it's not just flooding that can cause water hammers. If there is water entering the intake for example because the car is washed carelessly, it can also cause a water hammer.

When the water enter, the combustion chamber will be full of water. The problem is, water can't be compressed like a mixture of air and gasoline. So, the compression force will damage the piston, usually bend the rods of the piston and can damage or even penetrate the block.

So, this must be noticed. As much as possible, do not drive through flood that is too high, or start the car after being flooded before checking.

Dalam kasus ini, air akan masuk ke dalam ruang bakar melalui intake mesin. Sehingga tidak hanya banjir yang bisa menyebabkan water hammer. Jika ada air masuk ke intake misalnya karena tersiram, juga bisa menyebabkan water hammer.

Ketika air sudah masuk, maka ruang bakar akan penuh dengan air. Masalahnya, air tidak bisa ditekan seperti campuran udara dan bensin. Sehingga, daya kompresi akan merusak piston, biasanya membengkokkan stang piston dan bisa saja merusak atau bahkan menembus blok.

Sehingga, hal ini harus sangat diperhatikan. Sebisa mungkin, jangan terobos banjir yang terlalu tinggi, atau menyalakan mobil setelh terendam banjir sebelum melakukan pengecekan.
