1. How small can I go?

If you read the previous article about upsizing your wheels, there’s a rule that the new wheels and tyre setup must not exceed over 3% of the overall diameter of your stock wheels and tyres. This also applies to when you downsize your wheels, it’s best to have the same or similar overall diameter as your stock wheels. Let’s say for example your stock wheels are 205/55 R16 and you wanted to downsize to a 15 inch wheel, then your best option would be a 195/65 R15 tyres because it would have similar overall diameter.

2. What are the benefits?

The benefits of having smaller wheels is of course the weight, the smaller the wheels, the less it weighs. Which in turn can affect the car’s efficiency and range, as well as performance. Smaller wheels can also give you a more comfortable ride because of the thicker sidewalls compared to the larger wheel’s tyres. Lastly, it’s easier to find tyres for them compared to larger wheels. For example 15-18 inch tyres are easier to find than 19-22 inch wheels, and not to mention the bigger the wheels the more expensive the tyres.

3. What are the drawbacks?

The drawbacks of having smaller wheels are the possibility of having less grip because of the smaller tyres, less responsive handling characteristics, and brake issues. Smaller wheels may have less grip due to the fact that the tyres may have been not as wide as the previous larger wheels that you may have. However, if you opt for a tyre that is as wide as your previous wheels then your car’s grip may not be affected significantly. Handling characteristics are also affected by the width of the tyres, the less width means less capabilities of the car holding on to the road and the thicker side wall may be too soft to absorb the car’s weight. Lastly are brake issues, this also relates to the tyres as smaller tyres means less contact patch which affects braking power. Other problems are smaller wheels may not fit on your car as your car may have larger brakes. So be sure to check which wheels can fit on your car before buying them.

Namun, jika kamu memilih ban yang lebarnya sama dengan roda sebelumnya maka cengkeraman mobil kamu mungkin tidak akan berpengaruh secara signifikan.
